Create Community Art
Community "is a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment." * For human communities these environmental conditions may include a common need of intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs and risks.*
Now add the tiny word art to the end of community and you have a universal communication tool that publicly speaks for each individual community. Community art or dialogical art includes theatre, music, dance and visual arts. Each one of these forms of art can be created by amateurs or professionals but they must include a type of interaction or dialogue that communicates and connects with ones community.
Community art may express attitudes and feelings towards social changes or political movements. They may represent historical events or futuristic happenings. Whatever the expression may be, community art is a universal language that can break through cultural differences, language barriers and differing educational backgrounds. It is a community involvement of expression.
Although community art was not defined until the 1960's it has been a traditional form of art since the human race could create. Cave paintings are one of the first known forms of art which in turn served as a purpose to communicate their "community's" way of life. Community art in the form of dance and music has been around since ancient times as well. Although Medieval liturgical dramas began around the 10th century, the Renaissance is best known for beginning the popular demand of community art through the means of public music, dance and theatrical performance.
As a member of your community you have not only the right but also the duty to be involved in communicating and supporting your current community needs, preferences and demands. The best and easiest way to get involved is to Google your community events calendar or call your cultural town division. Check out a local theatrical group or a band playing at a local business. Visit your local park and admire the beautiful sculptures (and murals) that are representing your community. Attend an art show or visit a local art gallery or studio. Community art also brings in revenue from tourists and visitors. Show your interest in these art activities and you may begin to hear the voices or your neighbors and begin to find yourself participating in speaking out for your community and expressing yourself through art.
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."
Edgar Degas
Janessa and Jessica, owners of Academy of Art, help create art programs and projects for the community. Some projects include: Mile-Long mural, Keiffer Crossing murals, hospital gift bags for children, card swap with inner city children, plus countless art shows for children. More projects for community art are underway! We would like to hear your ideas for more projects or needs for community arts'.
